Wheldon steps out of car, onto field

Wheldon steps out of car, onto field
FRISCO, Texas -- Dan Wheldon knows a thing or two about pace. Of course, the IndyCar Series standout has a completely different idea of the concept. Wheldon, the 2005 IndyCar Series champion who won at Kansas Speedway over the weekend and was in town to promote an upcoming race at Texas Motor Speedway, participated Wednesday in the last part of training with FC Dallas.

Rookie impresses amid Galaxy stars
CARSON, Calif. -- One month into his rookie campaign, Los Angles Galaxy central defender Sean Franklin has already started to make his mark. Drafted as the fourth overall pick out of Cal State Northridge in January, Franklin stepped into the league's most high profile team and has firmly entrenched himself in the starting 11.

D.C. formation flexibility to continue

D.C. formation flexibility to continue
WASHINGTON -- D.C. United head coach Tom Soehn isn't one to chat freely about tactics and personnel with the media before games. Loath to risk giving opponents even the slightest opportunity to improve their preparations, he keeps his cards close to the vest and has occasionally deflected lineup questions by joking that he'll use his goalkeepers as strikers.

Chivas hope to reverse early trend

Chivas hope to reverse early trend
CARSON, Calif. -- Thus far in the young Major League Soccer campaign, Chivas USA has picked up on a rather disturbing trend.

The Red-and-White has allowed the opponent to score first in four of the five games this season. Perhaps not coincidentally, the club's only win came when Chivas USA scored first.

Donovan continues to shine brighter

Donovan continues to shine brighter
CARSON, Calif. -- Landon Donovan scored three goals and assisted on another, as the Los Angeles Galaxy won in emphatic 5-2 fashion against their Home Depot Center rivals Chivas USA. Alan Gordon scored a pair himself after coming off the bench, but the first SuperClasico match of the season was still a banner night for the Galaxy superstar.

Revs embrace return to normalcy

Revs embrace return to normalcy
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- No one was happier to hold training in the rain than New England Revolution head coach Steve Nicol.

The source of the happiness wasn't from the drenched conditions. Players slogged in from the waterlogged field, hustling into the locker room to find a warm shower and dry clothes after spending almost two hours outside in the chilly rain.

Stoic Moreno providing Crew big lift
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Crew continued the hot start to their 2008 season Saturday night at home against the Houston Dynamo, defeating the defending MLS champs in a gritty 1-0 contest. Columbus got another strong performance from Alejandro Moreno, a former Houston player who now has four goals in five games in the 2008 season.

Thorrington shines as Fire rebound

Thorrington shines as Fire rebound
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- John Thorrington and solid team play were the stories Saturday night in the Chicago Fire's 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids. Thorrington became the hero, hitting for second-half goals in the 53rd and 84th minutes. And the team held together to win their third match of the season.

Donovan, Gordon fuel Galaxy rout

Donovan, Gordon fuel Galaxy rout
CARSON, Calif. -- Landon Donovan continued his blistering goal-scoring pace, hitting for a hat trick and picking up an assist, and Alan Gordon scored two more as a second-half substitute as the Los Angeles Galaxy showed who was boss of The Home Depot Center -- at least for one night -- in a resounding 5-2 victory against Chivas USA in the first SuperClasico of the season.

Late foul proves costly for Quakes

Late foul proves costly for Quakes
E. RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The expansion San Jose Earthquakes had a realistic gameplan before their match against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.

Sure, they wanted to pick up a win on the road, just like they had done at Colorado last weekend. But San Jose would have been happy to escape Giants Stadium with a point. And if not for a penalty awarded against them 11 minutes from time, they just might have done it.

Chivas try to slow dynamic LA duo

Chivas try to slow dynamic LA duo
CARSON, Calif. -- Landon Donovan and David Beckham are each dangerous players but together the duo might be the most potent duo in Major League Soccer.

The challenge of slowing down the Los Angeles Galaxy's tandem will fall squarely on Chivas USA as the clubs will square off in the first SuperClasico of the season, Saturday night at The Home Depot Center (7:30 p.m. PT; FSE/FSE)

WASHINGTON -- Rebounding from a two-game losing streak -- including a 4-0 loss to Real Salt Lake two weeks ago -- D.C. United on Saturday reversed the result in emphatic fashion, getting two goals from Jaime Moreno and two world-class finishes in rolling to a 4-1 victory against Real at RFK Stadium.

Victorine, Hartman give Wizards lift
KANSAS CITY -- For the Kansas City Wizards, last Sunday's match in Chicago against the Fire may be labeled as an early distinguishing point in the season come November.

Not only was the 1-0 win a triumph (only the Wizards' second all-time in the Windy City), but it saw performances from two veterans from California who are hoping to translate past successes into present ones in the Midwest.

1. We've seen this before -- or have we?: Here's a well-worn cycle: One of the sporting equipment giants releases a new (and improved!) soccer ball. Goalkeepers hate it. Forwards love it. Everyone agrees it's more "lively" than a Saturday Night Live after party.

FRISCO, Texas -- FC Dallas came into Thursday night's match with New England as the lone unbeaten side in MLS. But much as they have done over the past few years, the Revolution left Pizza Hut Park with a victory as Khano Smith provided the game's only goal for a 1-0 triumph.

New formation comes easy to Revs

New formation comes easy to Revs
FRISCO, Texas -- After his team beat FC Dallas 1-0 at Pizza Hut Park on Thursday, New England Revolution head coach Steve Nicol admitted that he wasn't all that surprised with how well his team performed in a 4-4-2 formation, a change from their customary 3-5-2 due to a wave of injured players.

United focused on more than revenge

United focused on more than revenge
WASHINGTON -- Two weeks ago Real Salt Lake ambushed a tired D.C. United at Rice-Eccles Stadium, handing out a 4-0 thrashing that ranks as the heaviest loss of Tom Soehn's tenure as D.C. head coach. Now as the Utah club visits RFK Stadium for Saturday night's return fixture, a renewed United are raring to go -- but the urgent need for a composed, energetic performance outweighs thoughts of revenge at the moment.

FRISCO, Texas -- With a weekend off looming and over a week before their next game, FC Dallas wanted to end the month of April in winning fashion and maintain their unbeaten record in MLS. But it was the New England Revolution who prevailed 1-0 thanks to a 72nd-minute goal by Khano Smith.

FRISCO, Texas -- The 2008 MLS season might only be four games old but FC Dallas is the league's only unbeaten side. After opening with disappointing draws against Chivas USA and Houston, the Hoops responded with consecutive 2-0 wins against New York and at Chivas in their last two outings.

Through competition, unlikely friends

Through competition, unlikely friends
WASHINGTON -- One is an ambitious rookie who learned his craft in the land where the game was born, the other a steady starter who earned his current status by unseating a highly-rated veteran a year ago. They are two defensive midfielders on a D.C. United squad with only one such spot, who thus find themselves in a zero-sum game as competitors for playing time.

Midfield growth key for young Quakes

Midfield growth key for young Quakes
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- When San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop was constructing his team over the winter, much of the outside attention went to a defense that was expected to be solid, and a frontline that had some holes. Less mention was made of the midfield. Sure, the team acquired Ronnie O'Brien and Ramiro Corrales in the latter stages of preseason, but it's safe to say that the unit was flying a bit more under the radar than the other components of the team.

RSL go back to drawing board

RSL go back to drawing board
SALT LAKE CITY -- It would be easy for Real Salt Lake to second guess how they executed their game plan after the latest road loss, a 1-0 setback Saturday to Toronto FC.

Should RSL have pressed and attacked more in the first half to establish a tempo that was more favorable to their playing style? Did opting for a conservative approach early take the club out of its offensive flow?

Revs' Smith seeking to take next step

Revs' Smith seeking to take next step
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Revolution midfielder Khano Smith needed a break entering the current campaign.

His team acquired Honduran midfielder Mauricio Castro to compete for his position during the offseason. Smith's Bermuda national team hadn't finished off the Cayman Islands in the first leg of its World Cup qualifying series against the CONCACAF minnows and he had to miss the first game of the season. Missing the first game placed his starting status in doubt.

Reis pushed to maintain top form

Reis pushed to maintain top form
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Behind every streak, there's a story. For Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis, his MLS-record minutes played streak involves a cast of two characters.

First, there's Reis, the Revolution's stalwart goalkeeper. He's played 6,750 minutes in between the sticks, a league record besting Houston's Pat Onstad. No other goalkeeper has played in a regular-season or playoff game for the Revs since September 2005.

Retooled Chivas off to slow start

Retooled Chivas off to slow start
CARSON, Calif. -- In the offseason, Chivas USA retooled the roster by adding depth to key areas of the field in hopes of contending for an MLS crown.

But somewhere along the line the club's plans have been sidetracked. The new pieces are in pieces while health issues continue to plague the Red-and-White. Worse, the club is but a shell of the team that captured the Western Conference a year ago, players said.

Davis: Beckham, Donovan guiding LA

Davis: Beckham, Donovan guiding LA
In review: Looking back at Round 4 of MLS action

We could probably chew all day on the Los Angeles Galaxy and what's going on with The Home Depot Center's primary tenant.

We can argue until our soccer balls come unstitched about management's roster choices, this matter of putting so many salary cap eggs into three baskets. Ultimately, the proof will be in the points pudding come late September.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Kansas City Wizards defense made a very early goal stand up for 86 minutes Sunday, leading to a 1-0 victory against the Chicago Fire on Sunday afternoon at Toyota Park.

Jack Jewsbury's goal in the fourth minute gave the Wizards a 1-0 lead and the Wizards defense dealt with the Fire's strong offense the rest of the game to come away with a victory in the first of six consecutive road matches. It was also just the second win ever for Kansas City at the home of the Fire.

Olympic slate no treat for U.S.A.

Olympic slate no treat for U.S.A.
One thing is certain after Sunday's Olympic soccer tournament draw -- the United States knows it won't necessarily have a Dutch treat in China this August.

One reason is that the U.S. will take on the European champion Netherlands in one of its Group B matches. The other challenges? The USA's other opening-round foes are Japan and Nigeria, who have done well at the youth level in the past.

CARSON, Calif. -- Anyone who saw only the first half of the Los Angeles Galaxy-Houston Dynamo game Saturday would be surprised to see the Galaxy managed to claim a 2-2 draw. Conversely, anyone who didn't see the game until the start of the second half would be hard-pressed to figure out how the Galaxy didn't manage a win.

Quakes hope experience pays off

Quakes hope experience pays off
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- It's not often that an expansion side enters a match with more experience than their opponent. First-year sides are usually the domain of the young, hungry, and unproven. Yet when it comes to Saturday's matchup between the San Jose Earthquakes and the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, it is the Rapids who fit that description to a tee, with the Quakes trying to parlay their experience into their first points of the season.

FRISCO, Texas -- After starting the 2008 season with a pair of disappointing draws, FC Dallas finished the job with a 2-0 win against the New York Red Bulls at Pizza Hut Park on Saturday night. The Hoops got goals from Arturo Alvarez in the opening minute of play, his second of the year, and a league-leading third goal from Kenny Cooper in the 66th in the win.

FRISCO, Texas -- In his nearly 10 MLS seasons, Bobby Rhine has taken the field more than 200 times for FC Dallas. SALT LAKE CITY -- In last Saturday's 4-0 victory against D.C. United, Real Salt Lake put together a midfield combination which inserted some teeth into its offensive attack from the opening whistle.

Kyle Beckerman shifted over to the left side of the midfield, a switch which offered him a greater range of movement and freedom to take on more of a scoring role. Nate Sturgis got his first start of the season when he slid into Beckerman's previous slot at holding midfielder.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- After three games of the 2008 MLS season, the Chicago Fire have given up zero goals to an opposition player.

After five consecutive playoff appearances, three of which saw them reach the Western Conference Championship, the failure of the Colorado Rapids to reach the postseason in 2007 left the organization smarting.
