CHESTER, Pa. – Philadelphia Union manager Peter Nowak has confirmed that he expects to look at one or two players when the international transfer window opens on Thursday.
“We’re going to bring in a couple of guys and see if they can help us,” Nowak said following the Union’s 2-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday at PPL Park.
The Union perused the transfer window in April but ultimately declined when it closed April 15. This time around, it appears as if the club will try to make a move.
Robert Pires, an Arsenal legend and former World Cup champion, famously rejected a move to join the Union because the city of Philadelphia was not attractive enough for him.
“It’s always a great thing if you can improve your club in the middle of the season,” said French forward Sebastien Le Toux. “We’re very confident in here. To get better with more players would be welcomed by everyone.”
One or more experienced players could have come in handy for the end of the match against San Jose on Saturday when the Earthquakes struck on the counter in stoppage time to claim a win. The Union dominated the match and were pushing forward in numbers in the final stages of the game.
“That’s soccer, sometimes you dominate a game like that [and still lose],” goalkeeper Chris Seitz said. “We could have played another half-hour and I don’t know if we would have scored again. For us, it’s a little bit of focus and it’s a little bit of luck and for us the luck wasn’t on our side. We’ll go out Wednesday and try to get things corrected and hopefully play a good performance together.”
The Union will play their first ever international exhibition when they host Celtic FC on Wednesday, July 14 at PPL Park (8 p.m. ET). The transfer window opens the following day from July 15 until August 14, when the rumor mill is sure to churn.
