NEW YORK —FC Dallas' 20-year-old winger Brek Shea won his first career Player of the Week award as voted on Monday by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR). The U.S. youth national team forward sent his team into the two-week World Cup break with a victory, scoring both goals in a 2-0 home win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday [WATCH: Shea scores FCD's first, and then adds another].
The brace by the native Texan came in a two-minute span in the second half and increased Shea’s 2010 goals total to three. In the 58th minute Shea lost his marker in the center of the penalty area and slotted home a David Ferreira pass. Two minutes later Shea outmuscled San Jose’s Chris Leitch to a long ball into the Dallas attack and flicked a shot by Quakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon to ice the result for FCD.
It was the first multi-goal game of Shea’s career as he continues to enjoy a breakout season for FC Dallas after spending time on the bench earlier in the season.The second overall selection of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft has started in seven consecutive matches for the club, tying his career high from 2009.
The honor was the first Player of the Week award by an FC Dallas player in 2010 and the fourth by an American player after 11 weeks.
