Jose Francisco Torres is the choice among MLSsoccer.com fans to start alongside Michael Bradley in the US midfield against England in the teams’ World Cup opener on Saturday.
The Pachuca star garnered roughly 60 percent of the vote this week, easily topping fellow potential starters Maurice Edu (19 percent) and Ricardo Clark (17).
Torres played well off the bench in the Americans’ 2-1 friendly win over Turkey on May 29 in Philadelphia, and added an element of offensive patience and ball control the team has lacked at times in the past.
Clark – who is the presumed starter after earning the nod for the Americans’ 3-1 win over Australia last week – has 29 total caps, more than Edu (15) and Torres (10) combined.
